Until recently (alright, 1968) you could be guillotined for not finishing the bottle if you break the cork!
Most of my friends break the cork as a matter of principle!
It's just one of those things that they forget to tell you in those Emigrate to France books - a shame really as finishing the bottle really does improve the quality of life over here!

no! glad to hear i've been a law-abiding citizen so far. all corks will be ritually broken from here on out.
